The Academic Teams
There are ten academic teams composed of three students each, with each team focusing on a different discipline. These disciplines are Accounting, Business Strategy, Business Technology, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resources, International Business, Marketing, Not for Profit, and Operations Management. The teams have three hours to solve a business case and form a presentation without any outside resources, twenty minutes to give their presentation, and five minutes to answer any questions the judges have.

Debate Team
The debate team is made up of four members, with three speakers and a note-taker. Debate at JDC West follows the Canadian Parliamentary Style, regarding any topic pertaining to business. Once given their topic, the team has thirty minutes to prepare their argument and then compete in rounds totaling 50 minutes.
Athletic Team
The athletic team trains and participates in scrimmage games throughout the year in two unconventional sports. This year, the sports include Boccer, a game that combines elements of both basketball and soccer; and Circle Rules Football, a game which uses a double sided goal and a yoga ball for scoring. Aside from competing against the other school’s at the primary JDC West competition, the UNBC JDC West Athletic team also competes in the BC based Coast Games competition against JDC West school’s within the province.

Social Team
Social Team
The social component of JDC West is absolute insanity. The team is composed of two females and two males, who throughout the competition must check in every half hour in order to see if there’s a challenge. Challenges could be anywhere at anytime, with past examples including physical and mental tests. Not only do the social members have to compete in these crazy challenges, they must do it while wearing a costume with an extreme lack of sleep. Social is the embodiment of creativity, teamwork, passion, and most importantly, heart.
Executive Team and Captains
Our executive team works throughout the year to plan out elements of the program, create team events, mock competitions, engage with the community through charitable giving and service, and seek sponsorships to help us run our program. The executive team is the backbone of the UNBC JDC West program and we could not accomplish our goals without the countless hours that they contribute to planning and organizing throughout the year.
(From Top Left to Right) 2019/2020 Co-Captain Brandon Greenall, Vice President of Engagement Zachary Bundock, Vice President of Swag Kieran Kapphahn, 2019/2020 Co-Captain Ryan Tretick, Vice President of Charity Melissa Rispin, Godparent Terrance Badham, and Godparent Lina Goto.

Faculty Advisor
Dr. Kafui Monu
Dr. Kafui Monu has been a proud supporter and pioneer of the UNBC JDC West business program since his arrival at UNBC. Dr. Monu takes great pride in assisting the program and the executive team by further developing the program’s relationship with the UNBC School of Business, College of Science and Management, and other University entities. Dr. Monu also takes a key role by developing helpful teaching seminars throughout the year that help build confidence in our academic teams, teaches them essential case study solving techniques, and also introduces them to current business issues. Along with this, Dr. Monu is also serves as a coach for our Business Technology team and often sets his time aside to judge at our mock competitions. We truly couldn’t accomplish our goals without the support of faculty like Dr. Monu.
